Starting after Thanksgiving, one of the coolest parts of Christmas is the music. Notice I said “after Thanksgiving”. Music takes you on a journey in time but there is only soo much nostalgia that one can take. This year, I went to a mall and they were playing Christmas music in late September. That is WAYYYYY to early but enough about that… 🙂
As a musician AND one who appreciates music, I love the classics like Nat Cole singing The Christmas Song, otherwise known as “chestnuts”, Bing Crosby’s White Christmas, Frank Sinatra’s Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Dean Martin’s Let it Snow, and Eartha Kitt (Catwoman) singing Santa Baby!!!
Then there are the fun songs like The Chipmunk Song by the Chipmunks, Grandma got run over by a reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer, and Jingle Bells.
How about the sad songs… Elvis Presley’s Blue Christmas and Nuttin’ for Christmas by Barry Gordon (which I still use on my kids today)!!
And let’s not forget the instrumentals like the Boston Pops’ Sleigh Ride, Booker T and the MG’s Jingle Bells, and the sounds of Mannheim Steamroller and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
As newer artists come on the scene, we add new favorites every year like Kelly Price’s Ave Maria, Fred Hammond’s Just Remember, Aaron Lindsey’s When I Get Home (No Place Like Home), Cee Lo Green’s Mary, Did You Know, and James Fortune’s Go Tell It/Wonderful Child.
What is special about music is that no matter your background; your political, economic or social status; your religious beliefs; your race, color or creed… music brings us all together. We can all relate to a song at any given moment. Our memories will be as diverse as we are but those songs still unite us as people, as humanity.
This is just a short list of songs and artists that I’ve come to love over the years. Hopefully, you’ve enjoyed reminiscing over these songs as much as I’ve enjoyed writing about them.
So, here’s the participation part… Instead of just hitting “Like”, please “Comment” on what YOUR favorite songs are? I can’t wait to see your lists!!!!
Have a very Merry Christmas!!!
I love you ALL!!!
